If you have been diagnosed with a condition that consider a pre-existing condition, and have been in the past denied individual health insurance, then there are new features in the passed in 2010 that will possibly benefit you. In the interim period 2010-2014, you can take advantage of multiple options that are designed to help bridge the period.

That way, you can quite likely take the most advantage of both worlds - on one hand, you will have a privilege of using the best health care services that a relatively free healthcare market place can provide, and on the other hand, you may be able to get the federal government contribute towards a large part of the costs, all in one package!

Having finished reading this article, you will be in the best position to begin to take advantage of this new interim period. The two currently available new options for insurance that covers pre-existing conditions are: the new federally sponsored PCIP programs, and the ability to stay on parents insurance until you turn 26 years of age.

Federally sponsored pre-existing condition insurance plans, PCIP

Under the new health care law of 2010, insurance companies are obligated to offer all applicants individual health insurance plans, regardless of the pre-existing conditions. This will come into effect in 2014. In the interim, the government has stepped in and provided the interim solution in the form of a PCIP, pre-existing condition health plans, which will cover anyone with any pre-existing condition, at least until 2014. These plans, while federally mandated, are run either by individual states, or in some cases, are run by the government agency itself.

We will give below links to sites where you can apply. For now, it is important to know that there are important conditions that you must fulfill in order to be eligible for PCIP. First, it is important that you have applied for individual health insurance and was declined coverage because of a preexisting condition. Second, you must have stayed without the health insurance for at least the past six months. After you have collected all this documentation, you should have no difficulty applying.

PCIP are designed to be low-cost, medium-to-high deductible, and low-copay health plans.

Group are obligated to include dependents up to the age 26

Insurance companies that offer group plans to companies are, since the new law came into effect in 2010, obligated to include dependents of employees into the health insurance plans up to the age of 26. Group insurance plans have always been a great way for an individual to get health insurance that would otherwise be denied to him in the individual insurance marketplace, due to the pre existing condition. But since 2010, you will be able to sign up on your parent's group plan, as long as you are under the age of 26. The age limit has been significantly increased in the new law. Be sure to study the information below for more details, open enrollment periods and the like.
